Inland trout fishing is far from my home in the Chicago suburbs. Fishing for wild trout is a passion, but because of distance I don't do it as much as I would like. The West Fork of the Kickapoo River runs north to south and is located in Vernon County Wisconsin. The tiny little town of Avalanche is located in the middle of a large stretch of catch and release water.
Closing Wisconsin Trout September 16, 2004 I spent yesterday on a Wisconsin trout stream called the West Fork of the Kickapoo. My friend Ed Jankowski had invited me up to his new cabin in far rural southwest Wisconsin. It's a four hour ride from the house and all I could afford was a long day trip. Although my kitchen pass didn't extend to overnight privileges, I brought stuff to stay - just in case. After leaving the Chicago suburbs at 3:15AM I arrived around 7:30. Ed has a sweeeeet setup. He's right across the road from the river in a tight log little cabin. The ground is his family's. There is about twenty five acres of valley that they own. It has a small spring fed stream running against the hillside. There's a house, Eds cabin and a couple outbuildings. Over a cup of coffee Ed introduced me to friends Mark and then later to Paul. We wadered up on Ed's porch and walked to the stream. It is right across the road from the house.
The morning was good. I was happy with those first four hours. After lunch and after dinner were a different story. I saw no fish in the afternoon and couldn't catch the risers in the evening. I took off at sunset and was home before midnight. The inland trout season in Wisconsin closes in less than a couple weeks. With a little rain the steelhead/salmon will be in soon and we'll all switch gears. A good time was had by all.
